One of the reasons why 50 is the magic number for falling apart is they are all kinds of regulations that start to kick in with larger numbers of employees(and some of them exactly at 50) EEOC, ADA, and health insurance laws for some examples. Mostly startups have no structure around regulations and having to follow these laws when you hit 15, 25, or 50 requires expertise that it doesn’t have. Also following these regulations can be pricey which can contribute to financial instability
